Setting Your Child Up for Reading Success

Did you know that learning to read begins long before kindergarten? At Stepping Stone School, we believe in giving children a strong foundation in the skills they’ll need to become confident readers. Our experts know how children learn to read and what skills they need to become confident readers, while making it fun!

Why Early Reading Skills Matter

Skills like recognizing letters, hearing sounds in words, and understanding how books work will help them as they start to read. Our goal is to make sure every child has those skills and is ready to go to Kindergarten.

How We Help Your Child Become a Reader

Here’s what happens every day at Stepping Stone School:

  • Classic Literature Books: Our teachers read classic children’s literature to the children. These are the books children love to listen to and read. By building print concepts, vocabulary, and word recognition, children develop a love of reading and understanding of how books work.
  • BOB Books Reading Program: These carefully chosen books provide one-on-one and small group reading experiences that develop print awareness, print concepts, vocabulary building, and
  • word recognition. These books allow children to apply their emerging phonics skills.
  • Phonics Games and Activities: Through playful activities like sound sorting, rhyming games, and syllable clapping, children will continue to develop phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, and rhyming skills. These are all essential for decoding words when they begin reading.
  • Letter of the Week: Our curriculum builds alphabetic knowledge by introducing children to both the names and sounds of letters. Children learn to identify letters and understand how letters work together to form words.
  • Journal Writing: Journal writing develops the fine motor skills necessary for handwriting, reinforces print concepts, builds alphabetic knowledge, and supports communication skills as children learn to express their thoughts through writing.
  • Books from Stepping Stone School Publishing Company: These books are written and illustrated by our students! This program encourages a love for the writing process and improves reading and writing skills. These books also reinforce print concepts and develop communication and expressive language skills.
  • ABCmouse Games and Activities: Carefully selected learning tools provide children the ability to practice alphabetic knowledge and letter recognition in a fun, interactive format that is at each child’s level.

We ensure every child develops the skills needed for reading success and they are excited about reading!
