Chess is more than a game at Stepping Stone School
Stepping Stone School introduces the traditional, yet revolutionary game of chess to its Advanced Pre-K and school-age students. Children learn the history of the game, how each piece moves, and strategies for winning — then put those skills to the test in real tournaments. Studies show children who play chess improve analytical and critical thinking, visualization, math, and reading skills. But the benefits go well beyond academics.
Structured, strategic, and fun
Each chess session follows a consistent rhythm that builds skill over time.
Chess program questions
Chess is introduced to Advanced Pre-K and school-age students. Children as young as 4–5 years old can begin learning piece movement, basic strategy, and the fundamentals of the game in a structured, age-appropriate setting.
No experience needed. Our instructors start from the very beginning — teaching the history of the game, how each piece moves, and basic strategy before progressing to more advanced concepts. Every child starts at the same place and advances at their own pace.
Tournaments are held throughout the year and give students a chance to put their skills into practice in a friendly, low-pressure competitive environment. All levels participate — the goal is to build confidence, sportsmanship, and a healthy relationship with competition, not just to win.
Chess is available at select Stepping Stone School campuses. When you schedule a tour, ask your campus director which enrichment programs are currently running at that location — availability can vary by campus and season.
